Chiefs vs Saints Preview

Saints Look to Recover From First Loss in Two Months

New Orleans fell into a huge deficit early in last week’s 24-21 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, taking its first loss since September, and ending a nine-game winning streak. The Saints will look to avenge that loss and get back to their winning ways when facing the AFC-leading Kansas City Chiefs.

On offense, the Saints have struggled, at times, without quarterback Drew Brees in the lineup. Reserve Taysom Hill has done a nice job in his absence, winning three of four games and throwing for an average of 208.5 yards a contest, but the offense has seen a dip in scoring over the last month.

Still, the group ranks seventh in the NFL in points scored, and has playmakers all over the field. Alvin Kamara leads the team in rushing and receiving, having posted a total of 1,422 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns.

Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jared Cook, and Tre’Quan Smith have also been major contributors, combining for 145 catches and 14 touchdowns. Cook leads the way with six touchdown receptions.

On defense, the Saints allow less than 300 yards a game, good for second best in the NFL. The run defense is surrendering just 89 yards an outing to opponents, while the pass defense has accounted for 13 picks and 36 sacks.

Chiefs Hope to Win Ninth Straight Matchup

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense have been red hot over the last month of the season, with Mahomes topping 300 yards passing in six straight games. The signal caller leads the NFL in passing, having thrown for 4,208 yards and 33 scores.

In its current eight-game winning streak, Kansas City is averaging 32.8 points a game, and remain the only team in the NFL to average more than 400 yards of total offense.

Like the Saints, the Chiefs have playmakers all over the field, including pass catchers Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman, and Tyreek Hill. Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire paces the team with 724 rushing yards, leading the way in the Kansas City backfield.

On defense, the Chiefs have been a bit vulnerable, surrendering 24 points or more in four of their last five contests. They’ve been particularly bad against the run, ranking 24th in the league at 128.4 yards allowed per game. If that trend continues against the two-headed combo of Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara, it could end up being a shootout.

Chiefs vs Saints Picks

Against the Spread

Kansas City is favored by three, despite playing on the road. The Saints are 5-1 in the Superdome, and will be happy to return home following three consecutive road matchups.

The Chiefs, though, haven’t been phased by playing away from Kansas City. In fact, they’re a perfect 7-0 on the road this year. We expect them to make it 8-0 as they continue their trek to a Super Bowl appearance.

Chiefs (-3)

Over/Under

The total for this one is set high at 51.5, and for good reason, as these teams possess two of the league’s best units. The Chiefs have scored 27 points or more in four of their last five contests, but have also allowed at least 24 points four of those five matchups.

New Orleans is averaging 24.3 points a game with Taysom Hill under center, and the defense has been stout all season long. If anyone is going to slow down Mahomes and the Chiefs, it’s New Orleans.

Despite the test, we think Kansas City will score just enough to top the total.
